EBay chooses OneOf for first sports-themed NFT drop

The release marks the online marketplace giant's first foray into the digital collectibles space.

Popular e-commerce platform eBay (EBAY) has released its first collection of hockey-themed non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in partnership with Tezos-based NFT platform OneOf.

EBay officially announced its interest in digital collectibles in early May, though its CEO Jamie Lannone had hinted at the possibility of integrating the technology for months.

The NFTs range from $10 to $1,500 and can be purchased using the same payment methods as the platform's physical items. The first pieces feature field hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.

The collection expands OneOf's partnership with Sports Illustrated, which announced its own marketplace on the platform in February.

The move marks another push by traditional e-commerce platforms interested in blockchain. StockX, a sneaker shopping platform and eBay competitor, launched its own NFT marketplace earlier this year.

eBay is the second largest e-commerce platform in the U.S. after Amazon, with more than 140 million users.
