President Donald Trump is pushing ahead with tariffs on roughly 60 trading partners that he dubbed the “worst offenders” that took effect after midnight New York time. Most critically, the president plans to forge ahead with what would amount to a 104% levy on many Chinese goods. A selloff in longer-dated US Treasuries accelerated, worsening the slump in bond equivalents across the globe, as an escalation in the trade war sowed doubts over the haven status of US government debt. Every sector in Europe was down at the market open, but drugmakers are the biggest decliners so far after Trump’s comments that the US would be “announcing very shortly a major tariff on pharmaceuticals”. The Stoxx 600 Health Care Index has dropped to the lowest since October 2022. Weight-loss and diabetes drugmaker Novo Nordisk slumped along with AstraZeneca, GSK stocks also falling.
