For many, the traditional banking system has fallen woefully short in providing equality. According to the most recent National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), over 6% of U.S. households, or a total 14.1 million American adults, are unbanked. This number balloons when we look at the data globally. According to worldbank.org, 24% of adults fall under the category of underbanked or unbanked, which in real terms, is just shy of 2 Billion peoplem according to data from Statista Research Department, Morocco, Vietnam, Egypt, the Philippines, and Mexico are the countries impacted the most. Financial exclusion presents a host of issues, to the least of which, is that is expensive. The unbanked are a target for predatory lending and usury. For Bitcoin bulls and enthusiasts, these issues are nothing new and are the main reason why many believe the Bitcoin network can solve a lot of these issues. In an interview with Swan Bitcoin, Macro Analysts Lyn Alden eloquently gave her view on why the Bitcoin network can slowly but surely replace the current banking system.
